The Boulder Improv Jam Association is devoted to creating a unique dance improv environment at public jams in Boulder. It fuses the dance worlds so that the trained professional, wild club dancer, contact improviser, self-conscious groover and YOU can safely dance in a hardwood studio that is large enough for you to expand and explore! "If you can move, you can dance, if you can dream, you can improv."

The Sacred Space Jam is a relatively contemplative container and practice for open and free improvisation in the spirit of music and dance. It is generally a small and intimate gathering of 6-12 people, but sometimes up to a couple dozen. Some bring instruments and some don't. We have a period of unstructured warm-up, physically and otherwise, welcoming each other, chatting, stretching, and what not. We try to have a half-hour for this, (7 to 7:30), but of course many come too late to warm up much. Instruments are tuning and attuning as desired at this time as well. We start sitting in the middle of the floor in a circle, without instruments. Ring a bell/bowl to begin in silence. We go slowly or not so slowly, depending on the moment, from silence into movement, sound, word, dance, etc. as people are moved... About an hour after the bell, we ring it again to return to Circle in the Center for some time together in silence, and then take some time to share verbally before we close. The jam is in part a practice, study, inquiry, satsang, meditation, creative art, celebration, and play for most people there. But we do not try too hard to define it, and let it organically shift from time to time.
